I’m a defender of the David Lynch original cinematic adaptation of Dune from 1984, but I also recognize it’s not without its problems. But the property is such a massive undertaking, you can’t really fault anyone involved in the original production. I can’t, anyway.

But I’ve also long been a fan of Villeneuve’s work, and have been anticipating his approach to Dune. His Blade Runner 2049 one-upped Ridley Scott’s original, Arrival was one of my favourite films of the decade, so I’m confident he can handle the sci-fi, and with the careful human drama and thrilling narratives that were Prisoners and Sicario, he can manage to give the film the proper weight it deserves. Judging entirely by the trailer, I think Villeneuve has executed both facets, the imagery and the human drama, very well, and this definitely makes me excited for this film.

The cast is one of the most impressive ensembles of the year, and would certainly rival last year’s Knives Out for star power. The weakest link is wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista, and I feel he’s more than proved himself to be a talented and capable actor by way of Guardians of the Galaxy/Avengers and Blade Runner 2049.

Bonus points for using one a unique arrangement of ‘Eclipse’, my favourite Pink Floyd song, in the trailer.
