Nomadland represents the last of the 2020 awards contenders to cross the line into accessibility for home viewing. The major streaming services each have something to offer us this week, so let’s check them out.
Nomadland
Hulu
Directed by Chloé Zhao, written by Zhao and Jessica Bruder, starring Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, and Linda May. I’m always on board with whatever Frances McDormand does. She’s just superb. Zhao has become the most awarded filmmaker in a single awards season, with Nomadland already taking home 59 awards, with the big ones still looming on the horizon. I expect it to be the top film if an extended cinematic year.
I Care A Lot
Netflix
Written and directed by J Blakeson. The film stars Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González, Chris Messina, and Dianne Wiest. Am I getting serious Gone Girl vibes off Rosamund Pike in this? Yeah. But gods damn is Pike all around great, and she’s got a strong supporting cast around her.
Shook
Shudder
Written and directed by Jennifer Harrington, starring Daisye Tutor, Emily Goss, Nicola Posener, Stephanie Simbari, Octavius J. Johnson, and Grant Rosenmeyer.
Flora & Ulysses
Disney+
Directed by Lena Khan, written by Brad Copeland, starring Matilda Lawler, Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz, Anna Deavere Smith, Danny Pudi, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Janeane Garofalo, and Kate Micucci.
