New Films for The Weekend of April 23rd

It’s Oscar weekend, and I’ll probably spend some time catching up on a few films I still need to watch before the ceremony on Sunday, there are a few releases out this weekend worth checking out, including what would otherwise be a solid springtime blockbuster for Warner Brothers. Let’s take a look.

Mortal Kombat

HBOMax/Theatres
Directed by Simon McQuoid, written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, starring Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. I have a particular fondness for the 90s Mortal Kombat films. I know they aren’t great, but they can be a hell of a lot of fun at times. This updated adaptation certainly brings the fun. Gotta love that cast, as I’ll generally follow Hiroyuki Sanada anywhere. I may actually catch this one theatres.

Stowaway

Netflix
Directed by Joe Penna, written by Penna and Ryan Morrison, starring Toni Collette, Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, and Shamier Anderson. It’s an all around great cast in a claustrophobic space thriller, which is right up my alley. I was middling on Joe Penna’s Arctic. I liked it fine, but it didn’t blow me away, but I have higher hopes for this one.

Boys From County Hell

Shudder
Written & Directed by Chris Baugh, starring Jack Rowan, Nigel O’Neill, Louisa Harland, MIchael Hough, John Lynch, Fra Fee, Morgan C. Jones, Andrea Irvine, and Robert Nairne. I’m definitely getting a Shaun of the Dead vibe off of this. In a good way. It’s been a while since we’ve had a good Shaun of the Dead-esque film.
