Shang Chi Trailer Lands To Set the MCU Phase 4 Stage

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings marks the first solo debut of a new hero in a post-Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if the first trailer is any indication, they’re hitting the ground running with the new era. Take a look below:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, written by David Callaham, starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and co-starring Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh.

First off, let’s start with that amazing cast. The iconic Tony Leung joining the MCU, alongside the equally iconic Michelle Yeoh. Awkwafina filling the comedic relief/sidekick role will certainly take a place alongside Kat Dennings and Michael Peña as a great comedic character in the MCU canon.

More so, it picks up the Ten Rings arc that was completely abandoned by the Iron Man trilogy after the troublesome Iron Man 3. There’s such great history and a deep well of stories to tell that it was disappointing to see that go nowhere. I’m glad they’re revisiting it, and could lead to a great Phase 4 as we watch it unfold in earnest this year across four different films (Black Widow in July, Shang-Chi in September, The Eternals in November, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December.

We’ve got some great martial arts action with nods to Chinese cinema, and with Destin Daniel Cretton’s skill at great character work, having directed both The Glass Castle and Just Mercy, I have full confidence in the MCU going forward, and this will be a glorious launch of the next phase. Sidenote: I think this would be a great way to reintroduce Iron Fist and the rest of the Defenders back into the MCU.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released exclusively in theatres on 3 September.
